Mexico’s History of Independence Day

During 1521, Herman Cortes, a Spanish conquistador, ruled over the Aztecs in Mexico, and they became a Spanish colony. Spain continued to rule over Mexico for approximately three hundred years until the early 1800’s. During that time, the Mexican people stood up against the Spanish so they could regain their independence. A Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Dolores, Mexico started ringing his bell at the church, which was the signal to call to arms. This is a very important moment in history that is recognized as the start of the Mexican War of Independence. Currently, Independence Day in Mexico or in Spanish Dia de la Independencia starts a bit before midnight on September 15th, and the ringing is to let everyone know that September 16th is Independence Day.

El Grito Cry

Miguel Hidalgo, the Roman Catholic priest’s famous cry El Grito when he yelled out “Viva Mexico” declared independence in Mexico. Every year, a few minutes before midnight on September 15th people reenact the El Grito cry in plazas all over Mexico. The celebration of Independence Day includes dancing, music, and fireworks. The Spanish government first promised the Mexicans reforms, and they were forced to accept that Mexico gained their independence a decade later in 1820.
