Have you ever visited Puerto Vallarta in Mexico? The popular vacation spot attracts thousands of visitors each year that love the area’s amazing beaches, charming Mexican vibes, and excellent climate. Also, the area has tons of great restaurants, bars, and shopping, too. Plus, the Sierra Madre mountain jungle views and Banderas Bay coastline is simply stunning. In fact, the vast Banderas Bay is the largest bay in Mexico and the 7th largest bay in the world. Each year during the winter season, humpback whales come to Bandera bay to mate and birth their young in the warm waters. There are also beautiful rivers and waterfalls around Puerto Vallarta as well. If you visit Puerto Vallarta soon for vacation, take the time to explore local swimming holes, waterfalls, and rivers. Read more below about the best places to enjoy the natural attractions of Puerto Vallarta.

Cuale River

For starters, Cuale River is one of the seven rivers that originates in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. The Cuale River starts approximately 2,500 meters above sea level then runs through a small mining town called El Cuale. The river continues along a rugged path with deep ravines on its way to Puerto Vallarta where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. 40 kilometers in length, the river empties into the Pacific Ocean in downtown Puerto Vallarta under the Malecon boardwalk bridge that divides the Old Town and El Centro neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarta. There, you can almost always find locals fishing and swimming in the river’s shallow waters. A variety of bird species inhabit the area as well. There are also shops selling souvenirs, hats, clothing and more just steps from the river’s edge, too.

Las Animas and Quimixto

Secondly, Las Animas and Quimixto are two tiny coastal villages located south of downtown Puerto Vallarta. In order to get there, you have to first go to Boca de Tomatlan which is about   a half hour south of Puerto Vallarta. From there, you can either hike from Boca de Tomatlan or take a water taxi which only costs around 3 to 4 dollars per person each way. The Las Animas pier is sturdy and stable so visitors of all ages will have no problem getting on and off the water taxis.  These charming beach villages boast wonderful beaches that are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.  Also, the beach is lined with local restaurants that serve fresh seafood and authentic Mexican food. It’s a great place to spend the day with friends and family in paradise.

Yelapa

Next, Yelapa is a cool place to explore if you like bohemian vibes and a slower pace of life. In order to reach Yelapa, you have to drive or take the bus to Boca de Tomatlan and then catch a water taxi. The town is only reachable by boat and only has around 1500 full time residents. The charming small town is known to be one of the safest places to visit in Mexico due to its secluded location and friendly long-time residents. Electricity and phones didn’t even arrive in Yelapa until 2001, and many locals still continue to garden, farm, or fish for a living. If you want to get off the beaten path, head to Yelapa and spend a day or two getting back to nature. Make sure to take time to hike inland to check out a beautiful waterfall, too.

Mismaloya and El Eden

Last but not least, El Eden is a tropical location that was the site of the filming of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie, Predator. El Eden is a wonderful spot to spend a day enjoying the best of the area’s natural beauty. Situated in the south zone just inland from Mismaloya Beach, El Edén has natural swimming holes that are fed by the Mismaloya river. The lush greenery of the jungle makes it a nice shady spot to cool off on a hot PV day. If you get hungry, you can enjoy a great meal at the onsite restaurant that prepares delicious Mexican dishes. Skip the beach for the day and enjoy the jungle vibes at El Eden.
